Poor Joe is a minor character and a special character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

History

Background

Poor Joe is a hermit and self-proclaimed king that lives in a tree northeast of Doverhill. The player calls him a hermit but Joe tells them that he is "King Joe".

Events of Red Dead Redemption 2

The player can encounter Poor Joe twice in 1899. In the first encounter, he will tell the player to go away and say that he is not a hermit, but a king.

In the second encounter, he will tell the player that he is happy to be a king and say that the player doesn’t understand that happiness.

The player can also encounter him one more time in 1907, he will ask the player to choose between friend and foe. If the player chooses friend, he will tell the player that they have to pay homage, since he is a king, though he doesn't really know how the homage should be paid. But if the player chooses foe, he will tell the player to leave his kingdom. The player will say that he's crazy and challenge him to say it again, but he will hide inside the tree out of fear.

Character

Appearance

Joe seems to have created his own crown and coat. He wears torn pants and is barefoot. In contrast, his beard appears well maintained. He wears a handmade necklace with a wooden peace symbol talisman attached to it.

Personality

Joe is a quick-tempered man. He easily becomes annoyed at the player for being near his tree. When he becomes very irritated, he throws a rock at the protagonist, and will shout obscenities, telling them to ‘go away!’.

• Joe is unable to be lassoed.
  • Despite this, if a flammable or explosive object is thrown at him, Joe will burn.
  • He can also be killed if the player is quick enough to shoot him before he enters his tree.
  • Killing him will decrease player's honor.
• Joe appears to be inspired in part by "The King in Yellow".
  • He wears a crown almost identical to the one on the cover and art of the fictional entity "The King in Yellow".
  • His lines are similar in tone, simplicity as well as being irrational in his megalomania.
  • He lives in the forest and sports clothing similar to that of the King in Yellow.
• Joe's voice actor is Tuck Milligan who previously voiced Barry from Grand Theft Auto V.
