Legendary animals can be encountered in some missions, but will more frequently be located in the wild. Once players enter an area that contains a legendary animal, they will begin receiving a series of clues when using Eagle Eye. The third clue will lead directly to the animal. Legendary animals have the unique trait of always giving undamaged, perfect pelts regardless of weapon and ammo used to kill the legendary animal (this is true only for Story Mode; in Online mode, explosive/incendiary ammo destroys Legendary Animal pelts). Legendary animals were added into the game in The Naturalist update. Like RDR2, these animals offer perfect pelts with every kill, and can be sold to Gus Macmillan to make into a garment for the player. If the player has The Naturalist role, they can sedate the animal and take samples for Harriet Davenport. The legendary animals are categorised into four groups; Dark, Light, Red-and-Blonde, and Patterned. Each Legendary animal comes in 3 variants, where two variants can be found in the wild during free roam and the third variant can only be found through Animal Sighting assignments commissioned by Davenport.
