Background
Gavin was reportedly born and grew up in Maidenhead, Berkshire, while his friend Nigel claims they came from East London. Later in life, he and Nigel decided to leave Britain behind in their pursuit for a new life, and chose the United States as their destination. So, at some time prior to 1899, the two embarked on their journey and reached America.
At some point after reaching the New World, Nigel woke up and Gavin was gone. In 1899 and 1907, Nigel can be seen traversing the map in search for his lost friend.
Trivia
- There are no known characters called "Gavin" that can be encountered throughout the entire game.
- While not much is known about him, he reportedly has a caring mother and Nigel describes him as a large individual, while Tom describes him as being relatively quiet.
- When the player encounters his friend Nigel in 1907, he appears to have gone insane due to the excessively searching for him. He appears much more unkempt and stressed than he did eight years before.
- There is also a letter that can be found after looting Nigel written by their friend, Tom, provides further hints to Nigel and Gavin's story.[1]
- Despite Nigel's claim that Gavin is a "cockney" Londoner, their friend Tom insinuates that Nigel is a liar which is further supported by him pretending they had become millionaire cowboys in America while Gavin reportedly mentioned nothing of the sort in his letter.
- In the files, there is a restraining order from Gavin (which may have been obtained off Nigel) although this was cut out from the game, leading players to speculate as to what happened to him. Some of these theories include:
- It is possible that Gavin left Nigel after an argument, which is implied through Nigel's dialogue, although Nigel states that he believes Gavin was "taken by someone".
- Gavin may also be a reference to Gavin Free, a member of Achievement Hunter alongside Geoff Ramsey and Jack Pattillo, who is often unavailable at the office of the show due to filming other projects. Both Ramsey and Pattillo voice a Railway Clerk and the Valentine Hotel Manager respectively.
- Due to the fact that Gavin is English, it may be a reference to the British heartburn medicine Gaviscon that many joke about how it sounds like saying 'Gav is gone'.
- Another theory is that Gavin doesn't really exist, and is simply a a figment of Nigel's mind. However, Dan Houser revealed in an interview that Gavin was originally intended to be confirmed to be a real individual, but a side mission to find him was scrapped.[2]
