| —Dutch van der Linde naming Cain |
Cain is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.
History
Background
Cain is a stray male Catahoula Cur who wandered his way into the Van der Linde gang's camp at Clemens Point. Named by Dutch, Cain loves attention and found a new family within the gang.
Events of Red Dead Redemption 2
Clemens Point Chapter
Cain is first spotted by Jack at Clemens Point. The dog wanders into camp and decides to make it his permanent home, much to the delight of Jack. Dutch allows him to keep the dog and even helps give him his namesake, Cain.[1]
Saint Denis Chapter
Cain may continue to appear at the gang’s camp at Shady Belle following the move from Clemens Point. When present, he behaves similarly to his earlier appearances, wandering around the camp. At night, he will sleep at the back porch of the house. He is also still friendly with several gang members, particularly Bill Williamson. Many players report seeing Cain less frequently during this chapter, likely due to the larger and more complex layout of the Shady Belle camp, which can make him easier to miss.
Guarma Chapter
Cain will occasionally rest near the water in the short-lived Lakay Camp. This is the last chapter Cain will be present in.
Beaver Hollow Chapter
At some point during the transition from Lakay to Beaver Hollow, Cain went missing. Jack would search for him, until being bluntly told by an annoyed Micah Bell, "The dog ain't coming back." Further questioning from Arthur implies that Micah had something to do with the dog's disappearance. It is not revealed what happened to Cain, but presumably, Micah either killed Cain or chased him off.
Relationships
During his time among the Van der Linde gang, Cain is observed to be closest to Bill Williamson, often seen sleeping beside him and being pet by him. Cain is also seen to have an affinity towards Arthur and can be seen keeping him company when he goes fishing on the pier at Clemens Point. In contrast, Cain is at times the target of disdain from Micah, who has been seen kicking him and yelling at him to the objections of Bill and Arthur. If the player decides to scold Cain, all other gang members will react negatively (with the sole exception of Micah), telling the player to leave the dog alone.[2]
Trivia
- Cain's motion capture was provided by a dog named Einstein.[3]
- Cain can sometimes be seen sniffing and licking Pearson's food table.
- Dutch names him after the Biblical figure of Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve who murdered his brother Abel and was condemned to wander the earth.
- Cain's name may also reference the teachings of Judaist scholar Abba Arikha, who claimed that God gave Cain a dog, making him an example to murderers.
- At some point in Clemens Point, Micah can be seen kicking Cain.
- At Clemens Point, if Arthur goes fishing off of the pier near the camp, Cain may wander over and wait beside him until Arthur finishes fishing, eventually falling asleep if waiting long enough.
- At Beaver Hollow, while Jack is looking for Cain, Micah will scream at him to get lost, making the boy run off.
- In Red Dead Redemption, during the mission "The Gates of El Presidio", John Marston captures Javier Escuella. As he carries him to the prison cell in El Presidio, John says "Like Cain and Abel, I guess, leaving each other for dead."
