The "Legend of the East" Satchel
The Satchel is an item in Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. It contains all of the player's items.
Red Dead Redemption
The satchel is a vital item in Red Dead Redemption; it holds your provisions, consumables, and kit items, and allows the player to hold 5 of each consumable. Some of the items it holds are the bandana, animal pelts, the basic campfire, and a few other items.
The Treasure Hunter's satchel is an item you attain after getting Rank 10 on the Treasure Hunter challenges. It allows the player to carry twice as many items as the regular satchel.
Red Dead Redemption 2
In Red Dead Redemption 2, the satchel returns, with many more upgrades to increase carrying capacities of various categories of items. Simon Pearson can upgrade the satchel using previously donated perfect animal pelts after the leather working tools have been purchased for him through the camp ledger (which becomes available after the player collects and puts in the donation box any of the debts of "Money Lending and Other Sins I & II" mission). There's a satchel for every category of stored items, and each has its own individual requirements to be met. The last satchel, that drastically increases carrying capacities for all categories of items, can be crafted only after all other satchels were obtained and require additional pelts. However, during the epilogue, John may visit a Fence and buy any satchels that weren't crafted by Pearson for Arthur.
Once acquired, each satchel doubles its related inventory items' capacity limits. For example, the tonics satchel doubles the number of tonics that the player can carry. The Legend of the East Satchel, which is only unlockable after obtaining all other satchels, increases capacity to 99 for most items. Once a certain satchel has been unlocked, the perks that come with it become permanent, and thus added to the perks of all other obtained satchels.
Every satchel has it's own unique cosmetics, but the player can use the wardrobe and apply to their satchel any of the appearances from previously unlocked satchels (or leave default satchel's look).

- 1x Bison, Raccoon, Badger, Squirrel, Boar, Iguana, Panther, Beaver, Rabbit, Cougar and Wolf Pelts.
- $380 from the camp funds + $50 cash donation + $72 for the Varmint rifle needed to get perfect pelts of moderate animals (the price may be lower with high honor discount, and that rifle can be also acquired for free from a random encounter).
- In the Ultimate Edition of the game all the upgrades' prices have a 20% discount and the Varmint rifle is free, so the total investment is $304 from the camp funds + $50 cash donation.
Limits per satchel
In general:
- Upgrading any single category satchel doubles the limits for this category.
- Crafting the last satchel sets all limits to 99.
- One exception is the quantity of watches, which is capped at 5 and doesn't increase with upgrades (this quantity doesn't include unique watches like Antique Watch and Reutlinger Pocket Watch).
However, there are exceptions. See below for default limits and details.
Provisions
- 3 for most provisions
- 5 for each type of cooked food (each herb is considered producing a separate type of cooked food)
- 10 for biscuits, crackers, oatcakes and all types of berries
- 20 for cigarettes, regular and premium
Tonics
- 3 for most tonics
- 10 for ginseng elixir, aged pirate rum, valerian root, chewing tobacco and cocaine gum
Ingredients
- 5 for most types of meat and ground coffee
- 10 for herbs
Materials
- 5 for most materials
Kit
- 3 for most kit, like hair pomade, hair tonic, opened cover scent, predator bait
- 5 for gun oil
- Watches have their own collection with a permanent limit of 5 per type of watch, this limit is not increased by upgrading the kit satchel
- Unlimited for unique items, for example: trinkets
Valuables
- 5 for most valuables
- Unlimited for unique items, for example: rock statue, pen

- Unlimited for most documents as they are unique
