A Greeting is an action that can be performed in Red Dead Redemption.
Background
If Marston has honor past neutral and the player presses the O/B button or R on PC while facing a friendly NPC, Marston will tip his hat towards the NPC followed by a spoken greeting. The NPC will often return the greeting. Alternatively, the player can taunt other NPCs if their honor is below neutral.

Trivia
- Marston will still do the animation for tipping his hat even if the outfit he is wearing does not equip a hat.
- Gang Members and other criminals will not respond back if the player greets them, but they do respond if the player taunts them.
- Exceptions are Alfie Scruggs a member of Walton's Gang, Spike Haggerty an unaffiliated criminal, Paloma Figueras, another unaffiliated criminal and Kohana, a member of Dutch's Gang.
- If Marston were to wear the Bandito Outfit or the Deadly Assassin Outfit and tip his hat towards an NPC then his hand will go through the hat slightly. This is less noticeable with the Deadly Assassin Outfit.
- If Marston were to greet a Mexican then he will often hesitantly speak Spanish.
- While Marston will typically speak to someone as he greets them, there are certain NPCs in Red Dead Redemption that Marston will not say anything to when greeting. These NPCs include Abigail Marston, Jack Marston, Uncle, and Amos.
- If the player were to engage in combat within a settlement and not attain a bounty on their head after any potential assailant(s) is eliminated (either by the player or the local authorities), it is very likely that Marston will not speak when greeting NPCs for a short period of time. After a couple of minutes pass, he will begin to speak again during greetings. This is prone to happen when starting fights with outlaws in towns with a heavy gang presence in them such as Armadillo and Chuparosa, or when triggering and completing certain world events such as "Damsel In Distress". Marston will also temporarily refrain from speaking during greetings after winning a duel. It is unclear why this happens.
- This unusual behavior is more noticeable when taunting the undead in Undead Nightmare, particularly during the mission "Curious Tales from Blackwater"; should the player kill any undead and then begin taunting others before visiting the Blackwater graveyard as part of the mission's objectives, Marston may not actually insult the undead and instead remain silent when the appropriate button for greeting/taunting is pressed. Like in Red Dead Redemption, this effect is not permanent and will cease soon shortly thereafter.
- In Undead Nightmare, if the player taunts an undead while on horseback, Marston will still tip his hat to them as if he was greeting an alive person. This is likely an unintentional action left in the game that was carried over from Red Dead Redemption.
- In Undead Nightmare, Zombie Marston will still do the animation, but will growl like an undead.
